Communication options in Modbus RTU, RS-485 and RS-232
At FEMA ELECTRÓNICA we have expanded the functionality of the M Series of panel meters with our new options for serial communications.
The new serial communication modules allows the integration of the M Series panel meters into PLC controlled networks and SCADA systems. A direct display retransmission to FEMA ELECTRONICA’s BDF Series of large displays is also available. The new available communication modules are:
-
Module RTU – for Modbus RTU communication
-
Module S4 – for RS-485 communication
-
Module S2 – for RS-232 communication

Communication with PLC and SCADA
The availability of the Modbus RTU protocol allows the integration of the M Series of panel meters as remote data acquisition instruments to integrate in PLC or SCADA controlled networks. The Modbus RTU protocol is widely accepted in industry, and is supported by the main PLC manufacturers.
Using the RTU module from FEMA ELECTRONICA, a PLC can directly connect to any of the M Series panel meters, with access to reading values, alarm status, memory of maximum and minimum and setpoint values.
The RTU module can be added to any of the M Series panel meters, without need of soldering or special wiring, and it occupies one of the three available slots for retransmission and control modules. It only requires configuration for the local address, the bus speed and the bus format, parameters accessible using the front keypad. The RTU module is a isolated module and accepts communication speeds up to 57.6 Kbps
Applications as ‘Peripheral Equipment’:
Together with the acquisition, linearization, scaling and retransmission of the signal to a centralized system for data storage and supervision, the M Series panel meters allow for local control of the measured process, with up to 4 relays and/or analog outputs available, together with the communications module.
The M Series panel meters accept a wide range of signals, and are of application in process control (4/20mA, 0/10Vdc), measure of AC and DC currents and voltages (shunts, batteries, X/5 transformers, power lines, motors, …), temperature (Pt100/RTD and thermocouples), measure of frequency in power lines, impulse counters, ratemeters, periodmeters, time automation, …
RS-485 / RS-232 bus communication
- Reading retransmission to large format displays:
The S4 and S2 modules for RS-485 and RS-232 communication, integrate a proprietary ASCII protocol, with Master / Slave architecture, addressable and easy to implement. It uses representable ASCII codes, allowing for a easy and controlled PLC programming, being the frame directly visible with ‘hiperterminal’ type of programs
The S4 module for RS-485 communications allows for direct retransmission to large format BDF Series displays. Large format BDF Series displays are available with 60mm and 100mm digit height, for wall and panel mount.
The S4 (and S2) module can be added to any of the M Series panel meters, without need of soldering or special wiring, and it occupies one of the three available slots for optional retransmission and control modules. It only requires configuration of the local address, bus speed, data format, and working mode as Master or Slave, parameters accessible using the front keypad. The S4 is a isolated module and accepts communication speeds up to 57.6 Kbps.
